Sexy and Stylish Retro Style Bras That Lift and Add Extra Volume to Your Bust
The balconette bra is a retro cut bra, sometimes known as a shelf bra. It’s a sweet little bra with pin up attitude with wide set straps and low cups to reveal more chest, shoulder and cleavage. These days they usually come with a bit of padding to boost your girls and give you a modern-retro look under your T shirts and sweaters, but a more natural look than a push up bra will give. The balconette bras will also hide better under most necklines than a traditional push up, supporting well but hiding the straps when you wear your favourite Rockabilly dress.
Later, we’ll show you how to properly fit yourself for US or UK sizing (yes, there’s a difference. Prepare to have your mind blown!) but first let’s look at the best balconette bras available for you!

Rosme Women’s “Grand” Balconette Bra
Find Lowest PriceSo, see what we mean about the wider straps? They’ll hide under just about anything, and the low cups give you extra options with your necklines. The Rosme Balconette “Grand” Bra collection is a simple but sweet bra option. It’s well made, with an underwire for firm support, and the thicker straps mean more comfort for you when holding everything in place! The lacy top makes this one of those bras that are cute enough to dress up, but simple enough to wear under everything. The lacy detail on the top, and the scoop from straps to cup suggest “I’m so fancy”, while providing you with the comfort you need for all day wear. We love that this bra comes in white, black and beige, so you can have a couple to rotate through, but also that it is available online in a bazillion different sizes.
Rosme Womens Balconette Bra with Detachable Straps Collection “Anette”
Find Lowest PriceHere’s another one by Rosme named “Anette”, and as the title suggests the bonus with this balconette bra is is that it has detachable straps. There’s a flowery lace pattern on the front of this one, with just a bit of the lace peeking over the shelf. The lace however doesn’t extend around the back, so no worries over itch! The straps are thin traditional style, and adjustable, if you DO decide to wear the bra with them. But they slip off easily to wear with strapless dresses, off the shoulder blouses or even t-shirts with a bit of attitude. The cups are slightly padded, so go ahead and wear this one under your everyday T-shirts. Rosme offers the Anette in five different color choices, so you can even match your bra to your party dress! A brown or blue balconette bra is a nice break from the everyday beige or white. Rosme again offers this bra in sizes from 32D all the way up 4D. (It’s nice they have a 32, 34 and 36 DDD option on this one.)
Curvy Kate Women’s Smoothie Balconette Bra
Find Lowest PriceCurvy Kate has a fantastic reputation for making cute bras that do the job. The Smoothie Balconette Bra is offered by this brand. Although some think this balconette has more ‘plunge’ in the cleavage, the Smoothie offers up just the right amount. The smooth material on the cups are amazing under blouses and snug t-shirts, there are no seams to show! But, remember, this isn’t a traditional full-coverage T-shirt bra, so the balconette is going to show the world some bounce, without revealing the details (wink-wink!). With names like “Wild Black”, “Wild Blush”, and “Wild Violet”, in a subtle two tone leopard print, you know Curvy Kate is catering to ladies with sass. This bra specifically states ‘hand wash only.’ You like your bras to last, so we recommend hand washing all your bras anyway. Curvy Kate offers a mind blowing range of sizes, too, ladies, which makes it easier to get exactly what you want in the exact right size.
Cleo Women’s Juna Balconnet Bra
Find Lowest PriceThe Cleo Juna balconnette bra is a very good every day, “I don’t want to think too hard about this” bra. Throw it on, and it does its job of making you look casually fabulous for the entire day. The cups are lightly padded, so they aren’t adding anything that isn’t there already. This is an underwire cup, and the cup is a 2-part cup, so the Juna bra has excellent support. It comes in Black and Nude, which is pretty straight forward. What makes this bra hit the top 9, is the range of sizes. Cleo’s Juna bra is available in 28D, all the way to 28H (It can be a real challenge for ladies with small ribcages and large breasts to get a good fit!) It also offers sizes up to 38H. Although it’s a straightforward bra, and can be considered casual, this bra is a no-brainer for us. Adding several bras to your wardrobe makes them last longer, and when you find a fit like this, It makes sense to buy several.
Panache Women’s Tango II Balconette Bra
Find Lowest PriceHelloooo, Panache! The Women’s Tango 2 Balconette Bra is manufactured for those of us who have more to stuff in and hold up. Women with larger breasts have to have a bra that is going to work hard and play hard, while keeping everything just where it’s supposed to be, comfortably. So, although a balconette bra generally has a cup that cuts straight across the front, the Tango 2 has a little extra cup to hold everything in place, while staying true to the balconette style, although Panache does accommodate smaller torso sizes with this one (from a 28 inch) This one makes a comfortable fit for up to a 44FF. So sturdy. Seriously. As much as it’s difficult to find small sizes, it can be so much more difficult to get a good fit in plus sizes. Ladies, there are seven different colour choices with this one. Yes, SEVEN! That’s one for every day of the week. They add extra clips for support in sizes GG and larger, too. There’s embroidery on the front, and the added bonus is they sell coordinating brief or thong with the matching color and embroidery. They’ve been manufacturing this bra for ten years. Why don’t you have one yet???
Cleo By Panache Women’s Maddie Molded Balconnet T-Shirt Bra
Find Lowest PriceAnother one by Cleo. The Maddie style bra is similar to the Juna in that it’s a balconnette, but this one is manufactured specifically to be a T-shirt bra. No centre seams in the cups of this one! The smooth fabric does have a stripe in it, but that won’t show through your T. With this bra, Cleo also caters to a wide array of sizes, so if the Juno seemed a little plain-jane for you, the Maddie could be what you are looking for. The bonus of the Maddie style, is that it’s available in Red (and of course nude and black.) A bra with a cut like this, in the color red, is ready for all sorts of adventure! The Maddie offers a little more cup in its balconette, but still leaves the chest open with wide straps, to fit under any type of collar or neckline
Prima Donna Divine Lace Bra
Find Lowest PriceOk. So, you knew I was going to throw in something a little cheeky in here, right? I mean, come on, the balconette is a flattering cut, no matter what your size, you wanna show it off a little. Here is the Prima Donna Divine Lace Bra, a seamless lace bra with an array of royal colors. It’s got just enough peek-a-boo lace to be a tease, and the lace in general is just so playful. The cups are foam padded, and the lace travels up the straps for some extra super sweet teasing. Still a well made bra, but ladies, this bra is either a designated date night piece, or for you have to hide under your blouse as your “I feel sassy today” secret. This one is offered in US sizing, which doesn’t offer as much.
Betsey Johnson Women’s Starlet Lace Balconette Bra
Find Lowest PriceIf you are going for that all-out pin up look, Betsey Johnson delivers! The Starlet Lace Balconette is going to complete that sassy look, and make your swing dresses or your 50’s style sweaters look just right! The Starlet Lace makes me want to clip your bangs like Bettie Page, and strike a pose. The cups are lightly lined, but not padded, so it’s all up to you to fill ‘em! The Starlet Lace has more of a sweetheart neckline, which is true to the retro look. The lace is soft, and the straps adjustable. And ladies, TEN COLOUR CHOICES. Whaaat? With names like ‘Emerald City’ and ‘Blue Radiance’, the Women’s Starlet Lace is going to match your every playful mood with a perfect fit.
Rosme Women’s “Annija” Balconette Bra
Find Lowest PriceYes, one more for Rosme. They make the list again, because of their broad range of size offerings, and their true-to-form balconette style. The Annija bra sounds to like “I need ya!” and this is how you’ll feel when you strap this bra on. If you’ve measured correctly, you won’t spill out of this bra, and it’s going to put your back at ease if you have a larger chest. By the way, the Annija is perfect for women who have more to carry up front. It’s comfortable for all day wear, well made cups, underwire and generous straps to support you from day to night. As will all the Rosme bras, you’re looking at UK sizing (which really is more true-to-size, you’ll discover.) So be sure to measure yourself before buying!
Balconette Bras Buying Guide
Most women are wearing the wrong bra size, and don’t even know it. Those who might know it, don’t know where to start! We buy the same size over and over again out of habit. To help you find your correct bra size, you’ll need a soft measuring tape and a mirror.
- Measure your body all the way around just underneath your breasts. Make sure the measuring tape is snug and horizontal. Make sure your arms are down, and write down the number in inches. That’s your band size! If you land at an odd number, you will try bands that are one up or down. (If you are 33 inches around, you could be 32 or 34 band size.)
- To measure for the cup size, you’ll need to bend over so that your torso is parallel to the ground. Measure around your torso, so that the tape measure comes from around your back, circling your body to come together around all of the breast tissue. The tape measure should have the right level of tightness that will prevent it from moving easily but it should not press on the breast tissue. Take down this measurement.
- Calculate your cup size. Do this by taking your cup measurement and then subtracting the band measurement you took above from it. The difference will be your cup size. Proceed with choosing the suitable balconette bra size as follows using the cup size measurement you have taken:-
Less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) = AA
1 inch (2.5 cm) = A
2 inches (5 cm) = B
3 inches (7.5 cm) = C
4 inches (10 cm) = D
5 inches (12.5 cm) = DD
6 inches (15 cm) = DDD or E in UK size designation.
7 inches (18 cm) = DDDD or F in UK size designation.
8 inches (20.5 cm) = G/H or FF in UK size designation.
9 inches (23 cm) = I/J or G in UK size designation.
10 inches (25.5 cm) = J or GG in UK size designation
The UK cup sizing is used by most of the bra brands in the market. Shoppers in the US will see different cup size specifications but these have UK equivalents. If you are unsure about the size designation, you can read the product description or simply make inquiries so as to get the right fit.
- Don’t freak out when you find out you should have been wearing a 34DD, instead of that 38B you’ve been in all your life. Now, call all your friends to brag about your new size, and show them how to measure themselves properly!
How do I care for my new balconette bras?
There are a few key things you can do to make your balconette bras last longer.
- You’ll have noticed that most of these balconette bras stated that you should hand wash your bra only, and we stand by that. Get yourself some gentle detergent for lingerie, and a plastic tub. (one of those rectangle or square ones you might use to clean dishes in) You can put one or a few into the tub with a small amount of the lingerie detergent and cold water, as long as they are complimentary colours. Don’t put your black bra in the tub with a beige or white one. The dye will almost always run! Let your balconette bras soak for about 15 minutes, taking some time to gently swish then around, making sure that the clips are attached, so they don’t accidentally catch on any lace. After that soak and swish, you can rinse your bras out in cold water by letting them soak another 15 minutes, or gently running water over them for a few minutes. The best way to dry them is to lay them flat on a towel or a sweater dryer.
- Have at least 3 good balconette bras to rotate through, but preferably 6 or 7. Wearing the same bra everyday stretches the bra out faster, and you should never wear the same bra two days in a row. 3 to 7 bras will get you through a year comfortably, until it’s time to recheck your size (We recommend you check your sizing once a year, as our sizes change from time to time.)
- Store your balconette bras nicely! Don’t leave them mangled on the floor, hanging off the door knob, or folded up. The best way to store your bra is in its own drawer, stacked open and in a row with the rest of your bras. It helps it to keep its shape, so you don’t have to worry about the padding bunching up or losing shape.
Is it for EU, UK or US Size Standards?
Size is a major issue when purchasing balconette bras. We have gone out of our way to clearly illustrate how you can determine the size of your bust and choose the most suitable bras that will give you the perfect fit. Check above on how you can inter-convert between UK and US bra size designations.
What is the difference between push-up and demi balconette bras?
Demi blaconette bras will lift your breasts and also enhance it along your bust line so as to give you a more natural look. Demi bras are quite comfortable to wear on a daily basis. A push-up balconette bra, on the other hand, has demi cups as well as padding on the sides and the bottom of the cup. The padding inside the cup will push the breast upwards and inwards and it will create a fuller look with more cleavage. Push up bras will give you that edgy and dramatic look that is best flaunted during those special occasions.
